This is actual a series of three installments releasing on the same day. That confused me a little, I would have thought they would release on different days or in one book. But I enjoyed this one-I am a big fan of the Brutal Strength series and this one mentions a few of those characters.
Annabelle Morris has just found her husband Charles having sex with a pretty young thing. That seems to be the last straw for her. They have essentially been living separate lives and she's known for years that he's a player.

The image of the two of them was forever branded into my brain. Beaded dress bunched up past her waist, the young brunette had been on the women's restroom counter with her legs around my husband's hips.
But she wants the best for her two boys (both are still in high school) and she knows that Charles can make a divorce difficult and hold back on things that she feels the boys need. So thanks to her best friend Claire's advice, she's off to St John's island to think things through. She's staying at Claire's brother, Johnny Lawton's house.
When she gets there, she's met by a sully, grumpy although hot looking guy who gives her some sass. He calls her Fancy Face and acts like she's a spoiled princess but she's attracted to him just the same. His name is Johnny, although his friends call him Lightning. There is something between them and as the days go in, this budding friendship turns to passion. But then Charles turns up to bring his wife home. Her time with Johnny is over.
"But I can't keep you, Johnny. What we shared was wonderful. You gave me memories I will never forget. But it was temporary. We both know that. It wasn't even the start of anything real, anything honest. "
Annabelle is sure that her marriage is over, but Charles keeps insisting that they need to work things out. Annabelle has not trust in him, Charles has had a succession of woman and she suspects he never got over his one true love. One thing that surprised me was the revelation about that woman, Mary Timmons, the CEO of Black Cat Records. I knew Charles and Mary had been together, but didn't realize how much history there was-I'm not sure that Charlie ever got over her and Annabelle is more than aware of this.
She hasn't been able to get Johnny out of her mind, but she hasn't heard from him either. She gets the shock of her life about who Johnny really is and then things get interesting. This becomes a triangle but Annabelle knows which way her future lies and who her heart chooses.
There's some mild angst and drama in this one-enough to keep things flowing nicely. I have to admit that Annabelle was a bit of a doormat and gave into Charles over and over telling herself it was for her kids. I just didn't connect with that reasoning. Most parents want the best educations for their children, but either they can go to a more reasonable school or they can take out their own loans for college. Most don't choose to stay in a loveless marriage for their kids' security. Annabelle thinks Charles will use her affair with Johnny as leverage, but I'm sure there's more than one high priced lawyer who would love to take on her case considering Charles is immensely rich.
"He'll take away Trent's college money just to spite me, and CJ wants to go to UCLA. I can't afford that. I'm stuck where I am. In this farce of a marriage. Trapped for the next six years...at least."
I couldn't help but wish that Annabelle was a stronger lead in this story, although she did eventually learn to stand up on her own. I would like to know if there will there ever be any resolution between Mary and Charles. The fall out from their dysfunctional relationship seems to affect a whole canvass of characters and I'm not sure that they aren't somehow each others' soul mates who just never have been able to move on.

Are you Mrs. Morris?” The driver, a heavily bearded man wearing a Quiet Mon Pub ball cap, peered at me through his wraparound sunglasses. In his late twenties or early thirties, he looked much younger than I had imagined a caretaker to be.
I nodded and moved toward the jeep.
“You ready to go?” He dipped his shaded gaze slowly, sliding it over me. “Or do you need some more time at the jewelry store so you can find a more expensive watch with bigger diamonds?”
“No, I’m ready.” I frowned at the snide comment that implied I was as status conscious and shallow as all those social-climbers I had such contempt for. It was an unkind and unwarranted remark. He didn’t really know me. How could he presume to after only one glance? Then again, I looked at myself every day in the mirror and hardly knew who I was anymore.
“You’re late,” he complained. “You’re lucky I decided to swing back by the dock one more time, especially since the ferry’s been in for over a half hour. Still I wouldn’t have wanted to miss that fancy dress and the sun reflecting off that flashy watch of yours. Get in.” He gestured with his chin toward the passenger side. Moving my bag to one arm, I grabbed the handle and yanked, but the door wouldn’t open.
“Probably used to your chauffeur opening the door for you, huh?” He raised his bearded chin and lifted his shaded eyes to the heavens as if petitioning the island gods for patience. “It usually works better if you unlock it first, fancy face. The power feature is broken. You’ll have to do it manually.” His voice was a low baritone, but the insinuation was as unpleasant as his lack of manners.
I blew the humidity dampened curls out of my eyes and did as he suggested. “Why even bother to lock it?” I grumbled once I was in the seat, twisting around to grab the seatbelt.
“Because hardly anyone ever sits there,” he answered absently, glancing in the side mirror. He scanned a quick look for traffic and then pulled away from the curb.
I can certainly understand why, I thought sarcastically as I settled into my seat. He meticulously steered the vehicle around the busy shopping area alongside the dock, and I took advantage of his distraction to look him over. He wasn’t bad. Well, at least from what I could see of his face underneath his untrimmed beard, thick mustache, and long layers of unkempt midnight black hair barely contained by the ball cap. He reminded me of Pierce Brosnan. Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, to be more specific. Well, if I wanted to get really technical about it, Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in to Die Another Day after he had been captured and tortured for fourteen months by the North Koreans without the benefit of a hairstylist or a razor.
In other words…quite possibly hot.
Maybe.
But who could tell what was lurking under all that scrunge?
Maybe instead of Pierce Brosnan, the guy was actually Steve Buschemi. I chanced a second look to be sure…and felt a delicious, rippling heat along my spine.
Definitely not Steve Buschemi under there.
