Release Blitz: Dark Hearts by Micalea Smeltzer

Title: Dark Hearts
Series: Light in the Dark #3
Author: Micalea Smeltzer
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: January 24, 2017

I’ve learned that not everything is what it seems. If you start to look too close, you uncover things people don’t want you to see. It’s why I hide. It’s why no one knows the real me. But he sees me. He sees the darkness in my heart but he’s not afraid, because he’s like me. They say opposites attract, but we’re proof that like-and-like are a far more potent combination.

Novalee Clarke is hiding from a past she wants to leave behind, and Jacen Kensington is running from his.

The thing about hiding and running is eventually the thing you’re trying to escape catches up to you.

And when it does?

It changes everything.

Review by Jen Skewes

I always look forward to a new book from Micalea Smeltzer so of course I could not wait to read Jace and Nova's story.  This was by far my favorite one of the series.  It had everything to do with the story itself but it was also because I fell in love with these two characters, especially Jace.  I adored him.

Jace and Nova are best friends who are also roommates.  They haven't know each other for years but when they first met, something just clicked between them.  They are both broken in their own way and both have their guard up.  But maybe it's because of this that they just get each other.  Jace can read Nova in a way that no one else can.  He sees the brokeness when he looks at her and knows that there is more to her story but doesn't push her.

While these two are best friends there is that underlying feeling of crossing the line.  I don't think at first either one of them have admitted to themselves how they felt but as time goes on they see that there is more between them.  It is not just about a physical attraction between them, there is so much more.  But neither one of them are for relationships.  Jace never having been in one and has no desire to ever be in one.   Until that line is crossed and he finds that he wants Nova in a way he has never wanted anyone.  They are both scared and completely understandable.  Taking that next step could ruin the amazing friendship that they both have.  Will it be worth the risk?

I loved Nova and Jace so much.  Jace is your typical playboy who doesn't want a commitment and has a reputation of being with the ladies.  But when he is with Nova and it's just the two of them you see this side of him that I think many people do not see.  Nova has her own past and secrets to go with that past.  She hides a lot of who she is and what she really feels.   She is friends with Thea and Rae having a friendship like they do is something that is foreign to Nova.  She is usually a loner and keeps to herself, but having these two girls in her life means something, but when she is with Jace she can be more of herself even if she still may be hiding a bit.  But the thing about their friendship is how well Jace can really see her, really know her in ways that no one else can.  And that is what I love about them.  They had a beautiful connection and amazing chemistry.  I loved how much he cared for her and wanted to be there for her and vice versa.  They were truly each other's soulmates.

I loved the emotion that this story brought out and the twist that I did not expect.  I think through the book Ms. Smeltzer was leading up to that moment, giving a hint along the way.  But in now way did I expect that to be the twist.  And it was Jace's reaction and determination to help that made me love thiamin even more.  Dark hearts is about two broken souls who have found the one person in this world that they can open up to, be real with and share their emotions.  They had the ability to peel back each other's layers and together they both healed and became one.  It was such a beautiful story filled with so many emotions.  We got to see the characters that we loved from the first two books in this series.  I loved the friendships and the interaction.  Fantastic!!!

Author Bio

Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
