This is the first in a new series from Ms. Ashley- the Wild West Mc. This author is no stranger to writing alpha hero's who are members of a club. West "Buck" Hardy is rough around the edges, well respected and takes command of a situation. Clara Delany is down on her luck. Formerly married to a rich tycoon, she now lives penniless in disgrace. Her ex fleeced money from investors to line his own pockets. She was crucified at his trial and lost her prestigious job in the library system. Now she has zero money, is about to lose her car and is forced to do the bidding of a madman. Enrique Esposito is bad news and happens to be married to Clara's bestie, Tia. He has her delivering messages, unwanted bad news messages for money. There's a darker reason Clara's been forced to take this job.
"You have no clue, no clue, what it is to be me. And I not only know that because you're not me, but because, earlier, you said I entered this game. You were wrong. I didn't enter it. I was shoved into it. So you don't know everything, West Hardy."
That's how she first meets Buck. He's got all the details on Clara, whom he dubs Toots, as soon as he lays eyes on her. Clara is one attractive babe and Buck has no problem seeing that she may be just what he needs. He's in a position to make most of her troubles go away and she's the feisty little morsel he wants. Only there's more of a wildcat in Clara than Buck counted on.
Forgiveness is a running theme in Still Standing. Asking for it, granting it. Even for those that may not be worth the forgiveness being granted.
I gave it to him.
I wasn't sure I meant it, not totally.
What I was sure of was that I no longer had the time to find my way to the place of forgiveness.
I also knew I wouldn't have been able to live with myself knowing I didn't offer it even if I wasn't there yet.
There is a usually a set theme for Ms. Ashley's MC books. There's a rival group wanting to peddle guns or prostitutes or drugs (or all 3) in the MC's territory. The heroine is usually caught up in the drama and becomes a pawn as a bargaining chip. The gruff, course speaking hero often has an ex making his life hell. Throw in kids that he wants to see more of rounding out the story line. But Ms. Ashley seems to take these ingredients, mixes up the word soup and creates a tasty meal that readers can eat up!
For the first time, I had all of West Hardy on my hands.
Really all of him.
And having it all, I immediately learned there was more to like.
Because he now felt free to be like this with me.

“Babe,” he growled.
A warning.
Definitely.
I’d gone too far.
I also didn’t care.
“Okay, so then does Tia have to sleep with one, or, say, all of your boys?”
“Don’t do that shit. You know that’s not what I’m talkin’ about.”
“So maybe you’ll explain what you’re talking about.”
“I would, you shut your trap.”
I shut my trap and stared at his shadowed head.
He stared at mine.
Then he muttered, “Christ, need my head examined.”
“You could get off me,” I reminded him.
“Is this shuttin’ your trap?”
I shut my trap again.
“You take of care my house and my business as well as me.”
“What does that mean?”
“That means you move outta the apartment before they kick your ass out. You move into my house. You keep it clean. You keep me fed, that is, when I’m not feedin’ you, and I like to cook, so mostly, I’ll be feedin’ you. You come to work with me and take care of the office, and you go home with me.”
Wow.
Was he serious?
That sounded like…it sounded like…
My God, it didn’t sound like a sex-for-safety arrangement.
It sounded like a relationship.
