Review Tour for Penelope Ward's The Assignment

Title: The Assignment
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 28, 2022

BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano.
Number one: He’s obnoxious.
Number two: He and I were enemies over a decade ago in high school.
Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend.
I could go on and on, really.
When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents—the grandson turns out to be Troy. He’s now as successful as he is undeniably handsome.
Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice.
The only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face in between our many arguments.
Eventually, though, we slowly warm to each other and our outings become something I actually look forward to.
What’s happening to me?
Apparently, I misunderstood the assignment, because it certainly didn’t include thinking about Troy when I close my eyes at night, imagining what it would be like with him—just once. All the while hating myself for fantasizing about a guy who’s all wrong for me. A guy whose car I keyed back in the day. (Long story, but he deserved it.)
That’s all this is—a fantasy.
Well, until that one night at the bar.
The night Troy and I run into each other, and all of our pent-up frustration comes barreling out.
Still, I refuse to accept that it means anything.
There’s no way the guy I’m supposed to hate is also the one I can’t live without.

Lisa Kane's 4 Star Review

Aspyn Dumont works at Horizons retirement community. She's good at her job, and she feels good about the works she does. Her boss gives her a special assignment-to chaperone one of the resident's (Mr. Serrano) on outings with his son. Seems his son has "sprung" his grandfather free from the home without getting permission to take him off the premises. Aspyn figures it can't be too hard and she really likes Mr. Serrano.

Well knock her over with a big bowl of "oh no you aren't". Mr. Serrano's grandson is Troy Serrano, Aspyn's nemesis in high school. He dated and cheated on Jasmine, Aspyn's best friend. Not about to let her bestie get disrespected, Aspyn made it it her life's mission to make Troy miserable- she keyed his car, put a little special ingredient in his food to help clean out his colon and generally did all she could to get revenge. Now he's back in her hometown for a bit to watch over his grandfather while his dad is on vacation.

Troy left town after high school and never really looked back. His a financial investment advisor, makes tons of money and has settled down in Seattle. He can work remotely and wants to spend time with his grandfather. But when he sees who the retirement home has assigned him to chaperone his outings, he's surprised. Aspyn brings back memories that aren't filled with Troy's finest moments. He was a kid back then, and made stupid choices. Aspyn can't still be holding a grudge after all these years?

Aspyn is helping to raise her late sister's daughter Kiki. She never had the opportunity to leave town and see something of the world. She had responsibilities and her life is here, but she can't help but be a little resentful of Troy and all he's done since graduation. At first they are a couple of prickly pears, uncomfortable around each other, but drawn to each other nonetheless.

After each outing, there's a little more to bring them closer. It's only a matter of time until they give in to the chemistry between them. Keep in mind this is a Penelope Ward novel-if you've read her books before then you know all that sweet is going to curdle at some point. Just keep reading, take deep breaths and know that when two people are so right for each other, maybe they can work through all the wrong.
