Review by Jen Skewes
This is a taboo story about love, friendship and family. At the age of 6, Brant lost his parents in a very tragic and scarring way. His best friend's parents took him in and adopted him. It was on this tragic day that Junebug was born. June was bis best friend Theo's sister. The two of them vowed to always take care of her. They would bee the Luigi and Mario to her Peach. And from the moment she was born they protected her in every way possible.
While Theo and June were very close she had a very special bond with Brant. And as they got older the lines started to blur. While Brant never considered June to be his sister, they were still family. Which meant that those lines could not be crossed, no matter how much he wanted to. Something happens at June's prom where not only is that line crossed but neither one of them are sure if they can ever go back. But also know that they cannot move forward. Stuck between the line of lovers and family. Until tragedy strikes once again. And all they can do is be there for each other. At some point they have to figure out what to do with they feelings that they have for each other. Because crossing that line, admitting their feelings will have consequences that could destroy so many. What will they do and how will stye handle it?
The story starts out with Brant and Theo as kids, best friends that want to save the world. Until tragedy strikes Brant's life and things change forever. We see the two of them geeing up together with June. how they protect her. How his bond with June develops. So a good portion of this book is in the past. And for me personally it moved a little too slow. I understand the author wanting the reader to really get a feel for how much June meant to Brant and really Deve,op not just the characters but also their relationship. But the first half of this book was too slow.
Once it did pick up and we to to the taboo part of this story I loved it. The intensity of their love for each other was felt deeply. I felt for Brant and how conflicted hie was regarding his feelings. Overall I did enjoy the second half of this book. I did like that we saw them growing up together, I just think it took too long to get to the present.
