I don’t go for bad boys, or rockers.
And I don’t believe in love at first sight.
Until I see Beckett.
And things only get worse when I hear him sing.
There is no one like him.
The problem is that he wants nothing to do with me.
And I know I should stay away from him.
It’s the smart thing to do.
Only when it comes to Beckett I don’t want to do the smart thing. He makes me want to take a risk.
I just hope he decides to take a risk on me too.
4 Star Review
Star has left home to strike
out on her own. Homeschooled up until high school, she has always yearned to be
on her own. She starts college and is just learning what she wants and setting
the parameters for her life. She has had two guys in her life. One she dated
until he wanted to move things too quickly and one she went out with for a
while, up until he cheated because she wouldn’t sleep with him.
Beckett is the lead singer for the rock group Beckett.
(he obviously has no self- esteem issues). He is a self admitted player. Hooks
up after almost every show and has no interest in the previous evening’s
entertainment come the next morning.
Star is talked into doing a
little open mic thing at a bar one night by her best friend Lola. Ryker, one of
the guys in Beckett’s hears her and tells her they are looking for a back up
singer. She is reluctant to accept his offer to try out for the band. She sees
Beckett perform and can’t get the lead singer out of her mind. She ends up
going to Beckett’s parents’ garage and auditioning for the band (you read that
right –they are a stereotypical group practicing in his parents’ garage).
Beckett lives with his older brother Tate who has had his share of battling
substance abuse. He is adamant about keeping Star out of the band. She reminds
him of Quinn, a subject he never discusses but the one person who seems to be
the reason for all choices he has made over the last few years.
Eventually, Beckett lets Star
in the band and as time goes on, he lets her into all the parts of his life.
She knows there is a reason he has closed himself off from his family, from commitments
from feeling. Something to do with Quinn and his nemesis Dante, a singer from a
band called Cold Fever. Will Star be able to get Beckett to crack that wall of
ice he has encased around his heart?
“I’m sorry about that, I say.
Star just waves away my words. “I knew what I was getting into when we started
dating. It’s not your fault.”
Beckett vows to be a better
man. Someone that is worthy of Star. Every artist dreams of the moment they
will be discovered, that moment when all their hard work will pay off.
“You were so worried about me
getting in the way of your dream, but you didn’t need to be.”
This story has just the
amount of angst; enough to make your stomach drop but not enough to make you
throw your e-reader across the room. In addition to Beckett and Star, the
secondary characters, Ryker and Lola are worthy of a book of their own, there
is quite the story with those two. This is a nice, easy read, perfect with a
cup of tea and a favorite chair.
