I’ve always let my past dictate my future, letting it paint a picture of exactly what I don’t want to be. Where I don’t want to end up.
Drake Chambers is as arrogant as I am stubborn. A college quarterback, a national star. I thought he was just another one of those guys … the type every girl should stay away from, but he’s carrying more than the weight of the football team on his shoulders.
He unravels the feelings and beliefs I’ve held onto for so long.
I thought we had it all figured out. Two people who’d finally found their happily ever after, but the past always has a way of sneaking into the present.
With one decision, everything changes … forever.
Review by Jen Hagen
Emery has just begun her first year of college when she
runs smack dab into the star quarterback, Drake. Drake is the guy all the girls wants, but
Drake doesn’t spend too much time playing into their hands or beds. He is too busy trying to fulfill a dream that
may or not be his own of being an elite football player. Drake also has responsibilities to his family
that cannot be overlooked. The weight
on his shoulders should bring him down, but he knows that he has to remain
strong as there are too many people relying on him.
I always have to be
the hero, but when it bleeds into an expectation of perfection, it becomes too
much. Some days I just can’t f*cking
take it anymore, and I want to disappear, to blend in. Some days, I don’t want to be Drake Chambers.
Emery is the complete opposite
of Drake. Whereas everybody knows Drake
and he commands his presence with confidence, Emery just wants to be a
wallflower. She does not want to call
attention to herself and she takes to her studies heavily in order to maintain
her grades as being on a scholarship is the only way she can attend college.
Emery and Drake end up teamed
together on a class project. Their
attraction towards each other reminds me of a junior high game of cat and
mouse…when Drake catches her he lets her go again just to restart the
game. He would close off his emotions
as soon as he felt a little too strongly for Emery and this was so
frustrating!
As he watches me, watching him, something changes in his eyes. He’s leaving me again, pulling back.
Emery forgave him way more
than I ever would but I guess that’s easy to say when you’re on the outside
looking in. Things are going so well for
them when BAM! a pivotal moment in their
lives changes everything.
“You were just another curve in the road. Another thing holding me back from what I
should be concentrating on.”
Before I hit this moment at 75% I
didn’t feel anything special towards the characters, but all of a sudden my
heart is racing and I NEED to know what I’m up against. Now I can’t read fast enough and pulling the
book out of my hands is like pulling a shoe from my puppy dog’s mouth…you can’t
have it!! If you have read Lisa’s
previous novel, When it Rains, you know what she is capable of doing to you and
your emotions. I can tell you that this
isn’t nearly as brutal, but you still will feel your heart being ripped out
hoping that she will put it back together again for you by the time you reach
the last page. Such a wonderful read!
