I was warned about Tristan Cole.

“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”

It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.

But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.

We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.

Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

4 Star Review by Lisa Kane

"No soulmate leaves the world alone; they always take a piece of their other half along with them."

Tristan Cole is living in a world of pain. A year ago, his wife Jamie and his son were killed in a car crash. He is not the same man. He is a recluse and stays to himself. Elizabeth is reeling from the death of her husband *Steven. He also died in a car accident. She left town with her daughter, Emma, to get away. She could not deal with his death and running away seemed to be a good idea. But she is done running and is coming back home.

On her way home she nearly runs over a dog in the street. The owner, Tristan is furious with her and they take the dog to the vet to get checked over. When they are assured that Zeus will be okay, Tristan takes the dog, makes a snide remark about Elizabeth learning to drive and leaves. Turns out Elizabeth  and Tristan are neighbors and will be seeing more of each other.

People in town called him an asshole, and I could see why. He wasn't nice, he wasn't stable, and he was broken in all of the wrong and right places, but I couldn't blame him for his coldness.

Elizabeth needs to look for work. She was an interior decorator in a business she and her husband ran, but she isn't sure she wants to go back to that. So she ends up back waitressing at the restaurant where she worked during college. Her friend, Faye is managing the place and she is just what Elizabeth needs to get her head back in the game. She's snarky and rough and so good for Elizabeth's soul. She is slowly healing.

Tristan has been mowing her lawn. When she tried to get it to start early one morning, he snapped at her for waking up the neighborhood. He took over and did the lawn himself.

"I want to make something clear to you," he whispered harshly. Tristan blinked once before his stormy eyes reappeared. "I don't want you in any way, shape of form. Okay? I cut your fucking grass because you annoyed the living shit out of me. That's all. I want nothing to do with you again. So stop with the damn looks."

He keeps mowing it-meanwhile his house looks like a strong wind would blow it down. He can't be bothered to mow his own lawn, and keeps telling her he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. These two have a lot in common; they just express it differently. Both are lonely and miss their spouses. Both are scarred and have closed their hearts to further pain.

But then Lizzie finds out that they are connected by more than grief. She knows they won't survive this, they won't be able to recover. Tristan is opening up, Lizzie is this redemption and for the first time in a long time, he can breathe, he can think of tomorrow.

There is an underlying element of mystery in this story. There is redemption and second chances and then there is also abandonment and betrayal. All the ingredients to cook up a great story that will hold your interest. When you lose the very things you hold closest to you, do you ever really recover? Can you become whole again or are you destined to remain a broken shell of the person you once were? Are we entitled to another chance at happiness, or can we only every have one true love?

I didn't know how to deal with the fact that I loved her, because loving her meant that someday I could lose her, and losing people was the worst feeling in the world.
