Lo
Moving to River’s Edge was supposed to be a fresh start.
Away from chaos.
Away from bad influences and worse relationships.
All I wanted was to give my little brother more of a chance than I ever had.
It should’ve been simple.
I didn’t count on my transgressions following me.
And I definitely didn’t count on meeting Dare.
Tall, tortured, and tattooed.
A Lost Boy through and through.
Falling for someone like him was asking for heartache.
But I was a sucker for punishment.

Dare
I had a routine.
Eat, work, sleep, repeat, only ever doing the bare minimum to keep up appearances.
I kept my circle small and my guard high.
I spent years making sure I didn’t repeat the mistakes of my past, forming an impenetrable layer of ice around my heart.
Then Logan showed up in my town, in my tattoo shop, testing my patience along with my self-control.
She was fire and I was ice.
I should’ve stayed away.
But I had been cold for far too long.

What happens when fire meets ice? Fire wins. Every time.

Logan has just moved with her younger brother. They’re staying at her father’s house. They’ve had little to do with each other for years, but her mom is in jail for drugs and Logan needs to make sure her brother Jesse finishes high school. Logan had to drop out to take are to him but she doesn’t want that to happen to her brother.

Henry is my father. The father whom I haven’t seen since I was eleven years old. The father who bailed on our family long before that. The father Jesse barely even remembers, seeing as how he was only seven when our dad left for good.

Logan may not have an education, but she’s learned a lot in her twenty-one years on earth. She’s done just about any kind of job so she’s determined to get one here in River’s Edge, California. It’s in the middle of nowhere, but it beats the hood in Oakland where she grew up.

Jobs are scarce here, especially when you aren’t a “local” in this closed knit community. Logan checks out a tattoo shop, Bad Intentions and hits up the owner for a job. He’s less then welcoming as he turns her down.

“There’s the door,” he says, pointing two fingers in the direction of said door.

What a jerk.

In an ironic twist of fate, that same guy, Dare turns up at Henry’s auto shop and Logan waits on him. She ends up having to give him a ride back to his house (which is in the middle of nowhere) and Dare allows himself to check this chick out. It’s no secret he just doesn’t like people, or interacting with people. He’s got a close circle of friends, most of whom work for him and he has no interest in extending that circle.

I haven’t spent more than five minutes with this girl, but I can already tell she’s the type of crazy I need to stay far away from.
Logan ends up getting a job at the bar next to Bad Intentions, so whether Dare likes it or not, he’s going to be seeing a lot more of Logan.

Logan has nothing but bad luck. She’s trying her best to raise her brother, her past keeps following her and she needs to make a decent living to take care of her family. The few times she’s run into Dare, the ice between them is melting. He ends up coming to her rescue and giving her a job. Now this is when things start to heat up!

There’s a good reason Dare doesn’t socialize much, but he is close mouthed about his past.

River’s Edge is split into three types of people for me: the people who blame me for what happened, the people who don’t and the people who don’t know anything about it. For the record, I fall into the first group.

The odds are stacked against these two, but then again, that’s the story of their whole lives. They’ve never backed down from a challenge before, so why start now?

Doesn’t he know he’s not really broken at all? It’s everyone else who’s flawed.
