“Wes, I don’t know what you want me to say here.” Royal’s voice is broken. Maybe he is broken. Maybe I broke him. Lord knows I’m broken myself.
“Don’t say anything.” I start off with. There are so many things I want to tell him. The one thing I want him to know, that I want him, I will never say aloud. “When push comes to shove, Royal, you’ll break me. I’d never be the same after you. I’d be a shell of this girl.”
His face pales but he doesn’t step away. Something I had planned on. His hands caress my face before he says, “You have that wrong, Wesley. You’ll be the one to break me.”
4.5 Star Review by Lisa Kane
Wesley Bridges is broken. The love of her life, Trey, was killed by a drunk driver 6 months ago and since then time has stood still. She can't get on with living, and she can't connect with those around her, not her parents, or her best friend Annabella or her cousin Pierce. Her younger brother Bentley is surprisingly mature for his age, and is a rock for her.
"What if I never want to get over Trey?" "I was afraid you would ask that. And I don't want to sit here and tell you that's stupid. But it is. You can't marry Trey. You can't have children with Trey. You can't have a life with Trey."
When her senior year begins, she is asked to tutor another student, Royal Sanders in World History. She knows who he is; he and his best friend Channing Southerland are enemies with Annabella and Pierce. Pierce's sister, Ashley just happens to be Channing's half sister. (seems they share a real asshat for a father.) Channing, for reasons known only to him, wants nothing to do with Ashley. You don't mess with Pierce's sister, so Pierce and Channing are enemies and so are their friends. The two groups give each other a wide berth.
Royal is a gorgeous, smart guy who comes from money. Just about every one who goes to their private school has a wealthy family. Royal knows who Wesley is, but doesn't know about Trey. She intrigues him and for the first time in a long time,¦Wesley feels something more than numbness. The two hang out a little, mostly on the DL since Annabella and Pierce would have a problem with that and Wesley doesn't need any more drama. Ever since Trey died, something strange has been going on with them. Annabelle dates Donavan, Pierce's older brother, who is away at college. But it's clear that they are becoming more than friends and are less than sympathetic to Wesley's problems.
Royal is a player. He enjoys women, enjoys sex, but doesn't really do the relationship thing. He doesn't need to; he has plenty of girls lining up for what he wants to give. But Wesley makes him want more. Channing is busy with Paisley Vaughn, a new student who is giving his friend a run for his money these days. (Their story was Make Me, the first installment in this series-excellent read!). So Royal is at odds. We learn these things from his what Channing and Rachel, his sister shares, as the story is told from Wesley's POV. Rachel and Wesley are becoming friends. The forbidden groups are slowly starting to blend.
Wesley has a few major setbacks in her attempt to move on without Trey. A few are so severe that she needs professional help.
"I won't feel it, Aunt Lily. I don't feel anything." Tears flow down my face. I lied to her; I do feel one thing and that's overwhelming grief. Because for me, I lost Trey all over again, but this time Royal went with him.
I felt for this girl, she is afraid that if she loves again, she is being dishonorable to Trey's memory and it would be like cheating on him. She is afraid to move forward, but is desperate not to live in her past. These emotions are so real and common for survivors; those that are left behind when our loved ones die.
Royal and Wesley are really good for each other, but have lots of obstacles to overcome. The secondary characters do not lack for drama, there is tons of drama and deceit going on, some of which leads up to Save Me, the third book in the series.
"Trey, I can promise you I will always take care of Wesley. I won't ever hurt her and I'll be the best friend she ever had. And maybe one day, I'll make her a wife and mother. I don't know if that will happen for sure, because we are still in high school, but I do know I'll always protect her. Then he smiles. "It was nice to meet you, bro. Rest in peace."
I live in southern Arkansas with my husband and young daughter. There is also an insane Boston Terrier running around. I've always been a lone wolf and find my friends in books. I started writing at a young age and I haven't stopped since. Most days you can find me either glued to my laptop or my kindle. My first novel, This Beautiful Thing was an Amazon best seller for 11 weeks and a year later I'm still tickled to see people enjoy it. I may not be a huge seller but I have the best fans ever and I thank God everyday for every single one of them.
