Release Day Blitz: Consolation by Corinne Michaels

Liam wasn’t supposed to be my happily ever after.
He wasn’t even on my radar.
He was my husband’s best friend—forbidden.

But my husband is dead and I’m alone. I ache for him and I reach for Liam.

One night with Liam changed everything. Now I have to decide if I truly love him or if he’s just the consolation prize.

4.5 Star Review by Lisa Kane

In the Belonging Duet series we read about Natalie "Lee" and Aaron Gilcher. Aaron was on a mission for Jackson in Afghanistan and was killed when an IED exploded. Lee was 6 months pregnant. Consolation begins with the aftermath of Aaron's death. Lee is devastated. Her life is falling apart around her and she is drowning under the weight of her grief. Even after her daughter Arabelle is born, she can't seem to get her life on track. She refuses the help of others and wallows in her depression.

No one can know the extreme agony I'm living right this moment. Losing the love of my life, the father of my child, eats me alive.

Enter Liam-Aaron's best friend. He is determined to help Lee and feels a responsibility to her, whether it's simple things like getting the house repairs done or helping her with the baby. He storms into her life with his bullshit radar in full force-every time she claims she "is fine" he calls her on it.

"I don't get to be whatever else. I have Arabelle," I say as I look at the baby in my arms. "I have to be fine." The steel wall I hide behind is strong and solid. I'm safe there.

His help starts out in small ways; getting Aaron's car running so Lee can sell it, fixing the things outside the house that are need of repair. But then it becomes more personal-hanging out for pizza, taking her out to get something to eat. Liam always includes the baby in everything.

Lee finds herself depending on Liam more and more. What worries her is that she may feel the beginnings of something more than just friendship for him. She is riddled with guilt and thinks she is betraying Aaron. But days turn into months and before you know it, it's  almost a year since his death. Liam may have tried to get Lee out of his head with other women, but can't seem to find the interest to actual go through with anything. She and her little baby are quickly taking over his heart. She is not a girl you screw and forget. She is the real deal, the one you spend forever with, the one you take home to meet your mom.

"I cared for her all those years we were friends. But I'm falling in love with her," I admit for the first time to anyone including myself.

Lee is confronted with some very ugly facts about Aaron and some nasty secrets he held from her. Devastating secrets. Secrets that made my heart hurt and my Kindle became the devil in my hands. Inside my head I kept screaming, No way can this be happening." How much can one person take before they shatter into a million pieces? All of which made me love Liam a million times more.

"You think I don't have sympathy for what you feel? You're fucking kidding me. I've never said a word, but I'm fighting a damn ghost."

But of course, this is a romance novel and angst and friction are what makes a good story into a great story. So just when Lee and Liam seem to be in a good place-BAM the unthinkable happens and you will be left staring at your Kindle and thinking What the Hell? No Way! I am so looking forward to Conviction-in fact, I need it now, but will have to be wait..not so patiently until Ms. Michaels once again takes my heart and soul on a roller coaster ride.
