Synopsis

“There is a vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it."

Two years ago, Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life. And she made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman. Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time. And she likes it.

Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation. It's certainly the best way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.

When an accident brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms. He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.

Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all. But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering? Can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?

4.5 star review

We  have found love together, and it is beyond glorious

I loved Off Sides by Sawyer Bennett and was excited when I found out that Ryan's sister Emily was getting her own story in Off Limits.  Sawyer Bennett has done an amazing job with this story.  Off Limits takes place a few years after the end of Off Sides.

When we first met Emily in Off Sides she was basically a spoiled brat who did everything her mother told her to, no matter who she hurt.  She has come a long way since then. Since her brother Ryan has freed himself from the clutches of his family, Emily sees how happy he is and wants that for herself.  She has a moment with her sister-in-law Danny where she realizes that she misjudged her and that appearances aren't everything, it's what's on the inside that counts.  She wants to change and become a better person, one who no longer lives by her mother's rules and standards.  She is living in New York City and enrolled in Columbia.  She loves the feeling of being free and on her own and as an added bonus she gets to live close to Ryan and Danny, whom she has become very close with in the past few years.  Emily want to pursue a journalism degree which is not the path that her mother has chosen for her.  Her mother wants her to become a doctor or lawyer, but Emily has every intention of standing up to her mother, even if it means losing her trust fund.

One day after interviewing one of her brother's teammates, she literally crashes into Nix Caldwell and his motorcycle, and to say he is mad, is an understatement.  Despite the fact that he is angry, extremely infuriating and arrogant, Emily can't help the attraction she has for this man in front of her who is hot and sexy.  Unfortunately with no trust fund Emily cannot afford to make payments for the damages as originally agreed upon, so instead Nix comes up with another way to pay him back.  Emily works as his assistant/bookkeeper as a way of working off the debt, which is an offer that Emily doesn't refuse.

"Nix...you are the most amazing man I have ever known.  I'm lost without you, too.  My heart is your for however long you want to keep it."

What can I say about Nix Caldwell, except that I love him!  Yes he is arrogant and angry and despite all of that you still fall in love with him.  Oh and did I mention how sexy he is.  He has served two tours in Afghanistan and since returning, he has isolated himself form those around him.  No one other than his family really knows what happened over there and the guilt that Nix has been carrying around over it has been weighing him down and taken over his life completely.  He has walls up that are so thick, no one can break them.  That is until he meets Emily.  Emily is the complete opposite of Nix.  She is trying to embrace life and everything it has to offer, while Nix just wants to hide from it.  There is no denying the chemistry between the two of them and so they agree to a sex only, no strings attached relationship.  But as they spend more time together, Emily starts to slowly break down the walls that he has built up around him.   She gets him in ways that most people don't.  She knows when it is enough and when to stop pushing for him to open up more.  And no matter how much they both deny it, their relationship is much deeper than sex.   But what happens when Emily pushes Nix farther than he wants to go and Nix can't handle it?  Will he lose the one thing that makes sense in his life and will he finally open up his heart to her completely?

"I love you more than the air I breathe and I feel so very empty without you in my life." ~ Nix

I loved Nix and Emily together.  The chemistry between the two of them was off the charts.  Their first time together, we saw a dominant side of Nix that was hot and sexy.   Despite his anger issues and the fact that all he wanted was a sexual relationship, you see how much he actually cares for Emily and wants to protect her.  He does have a sweet side to him that will melt your heart.  I love watching the transformation that Emily went through from the first book to this one. She has certainly grown and matured and I fell in love with her character.  Sawyer Bennett has done an amazing job with this story about a man, who is so broken and closed off, being able to find love when least expected.  I became a fan of Sawyer's after reading Off Sides, but I think she took this one to the next level.  We see Nix dealing with some deeper issues and see how he finally is able to come to terms with it all and move on from it. The ending was just beautiful and will make you both smile and cry.  And I loved that we also got to see a piece of  Ryan and Danny's HEA as well.  Another job well done by Ms. Bennett!

About the author
Sawyer Bennett is the pen name for a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
