From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.

He was the nerd.

I was the playboy.

She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.

Amber never knew how I felt.

They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.

When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.

One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.

Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.

Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.

She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend— me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.

When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she got the surprise of her life to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

Review by Lisa Kane

Everyone who comes into your life serves a purpose to teach you in some way.

Amber Walton is trying to deal with getting dumped by Rory, her boyfriend of nine years. After he got in a car accident, he had some kind of come to Jesus moment, and realized that they haven’t given themselves a chance to meet other people. So see…he’s really doing Amber a favor.
Channing Lord was Amber’s best friend Lainey’s older brother. When they were growing up, they were close, but after Channing moved away to go to college, she and Rory felt him distance himself a bit. Now he’s going to be in town for work. It’s only temporary-he’ll being leaving Boston again and going back to Chicago. When he calls Amber to see if she has a place he can stay she’s happy to hear from him. He always made her feel special. Ok…she may have had a crush on him, but never acted on it.

Channing Lord loved women, and they loved him. That was the bottom line.

Channing was always gorgeous, that certainly hasn’t changed. He’s funny and smart and best of all-he can cook. He doesn’t hold back on his views about Rory, he thinks he was a total fool to let Amber go. He can’t believe she didn’t break up with him.
Channing may be attracted to Amber too. He’s had his share of women, not really making any commitments to anyone. He had met a girl, Emily, who he had real feelings for, but she ended up back with her ex.
Amber needs a release; all this pent up lust for Channing isn’t doing her hormones any good.

“Let’s see. One: Channing has slept with half of my friends back home. Two: he was Rory’s best friend for a while. Three: I look at him like a brother.”

When her best friend Annabelle comes up with the bright idea of an escort. She’s guaranteed anonymity, a great experience and she can afford it. So while checking out the site, Amber chooses Gentleman Nine. Now you know where the title comes from….

I read through them all-eventually returning to the one who had stood out the most: Gentleman Nine.

Channing might stumble upon the website and just might put the kibosh on this whole thing. Why hire a stranger when she can have the real thing?

It truly was my intention to try to hook her up with someone decent if the opportunity presented itself at the bar tonight. But the more time we spent there talking, drinking, and reminiscing, the more I hoped no prospects came along.

Hearts will bruise, eyes will get wet and Kindles may fly a bit.

In my heart, I knew our story wasn’t going to have a simple ending.

Gentleman Nine is funny and poignant and has a couple of angsty twists. Another great read from Penelope Ward!
