4 Star Review by Jennifer Hagen
Jade is beginning her senior year of high school and she
just wants to hide inside herself, being careful to not even form a shadow. She is constantly belittled by her alcoholic
mother and her boyfriend, Doug. She
doesn’t see the beauty in herself and she definitely doesn’t believe she has
anything to offer anybody. She is happy
that Doug chooses her to spend his time with and she has accepted his snarky comments
as the price of acceptance. She has let
their words eat away at her self-confidence and lets them use her as a scape
goat, never once using her voice to speak her thoughts. I was fighting back tears as she went
through her daily struggles just trying to be accepted.
Every day is the same for Jade. Her alcoholic mother shows no love for Jade
and her boyfriend degrades her. Her life
is the same cycle – wash, rinse, repeat.
That is until the first day of school when a vision from her past
returns to town. Kiernan and Jade met
when they were 5 years old and this is the first time they have seen each other
in 12 years. Kiernan is full of life
and he wants Jade to see that life can be fun.
He has made it his mission to be certain that Jade has moments in life
that make her smile.
“Life doesn’t last
forever, Jade. You can’t forget to live
it.”
Kiernan has a beautiful soul. You can’t help but smile when he’s
around. He makes life fun and sees the
beauty in all that life can offer him.
He never takes a day for granted.
He is willing to stand up for Jade and take the hits.
“Enough is
enough. This has to stop, Jade. And you have to be the one to stop it.”
Jade and Kiernan develop a strong friendship that cannot
be separated by any force …or is there something that can tear them apart? Kiernan is holding back something very
important and when the truth is out will Jade be strong enough to stand by
him? Has Kiernan given her enough life
lessons to allow her inner strength to persevere?
I felt my heart
break and couldn’t believe that I’d survive.
That I was still capable of feeling anything at all. To literally feel your heart crack wide open
and live…I almost wished I hadn’t. The
pain was like nothing I’d ever experienced before.
I was completely blindsided about 70% in. After this I had to wipe away my tears with a
finger swipe and eventually this escalated into using my pajama shirt. By the time I finished my shirt was wet, my
eyes were sore and I had dried tears on
my cheeks. But I loved every heart-aching
minute of it. It’s a beautiful story of having that one
person lead you out of the depths of despair and help you on the path to self
discovery, only to find a one-of-a-kind love along the way. This is the first book in the series with a
novella and another full-length book to be released.
